About us
World-class research,
international competitiveness,
This is the Department of Physics and Photon Science
Hello.
I am Kim, Keun-Young, Head of the Department of Physics and Photon Science at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST).
Our department originated from the “School of Photonics,” established in 2006 to foster talent who would lead physics and advanced optical convergence science, based on GIST’s top-tier optical science research capabilities in Korea. In 2012, the Department of Physics and Photon Science was founded within the School of Physics and Chemistry. Currently, it comprises 14 professors, 11 researchers, 81 graduate students, and 35 undergraduate students. Through entities such as the Center for Relativistic Ultrafast Science and the Center for High-Energy Density Physics, we are conducting world-class research and evolving into a department that nurtures globally competitive individuals.
Our department will cultivate world-leading professionals who possess creative expertise in physics and optical science (Creative Scientists), lead international-level research (Global Research Leaders), and drive national industrial technology (Practical Industrial Leaders).
