About us

World-class research,
international competitiveness,
This is the Department of Physics and Photon Science

Welcome to the Department of Physics and Photon Science at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST).

The Department of Physics and Photon Science was established in 2012, evolving from the School of Photonics founded in 2006. Despite its relatively short history, the department has grown rapidly and is actively engaged in diverse research ranging from fundamental theories to advanced applications. Today, it has established itself as an international hub for education and research.

Our main research areas encompass Optics, Condensed Matter Physics, Plasma Physics, Quantum Science and Technology, and Particle Physics. The department also maintains close collaborations with the Advanced Photonics Research Institute (APRI) and the IBS Center for Relativistic Laser Science (CoReLS). Leveraging state-of-the-art research infrastructure, we pursue interdisciplinary research that contributes to academic excellence as well as national strategic technologies and industrial innovation.

The Department of Physics and Photon Science is dedicated to cultivating Creative Scientists with strong expertise in physics and photon science, Global Research Leaders who will drive internationally competitive research, and Practical Industrial Leaders who will advance technological innovation. Moving forward, we will continue to pioneer new knowledge and foster outstanding talent, further strengthening our role as a leading department in education and research at the international level.
