A joint research team from the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology and Pohang University of Science and Technology has achieved a world first by inducing macroscopic magnetism in bilayer molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2), a nonmagnetic two-dimensional semiconductor, using linearly polarized light. The collaboration was led by Professor Dongbin Shin of GIST’s Department of Physics and Photon Science and Professor Dong Eon Kim of POSTECH’s Department of Physics and Division of Advanced Nuclear Engineering. This breakthrough overcomes the conventional requirement for circularly polarized light or an external magnetic field to induce magnetism optically. By coupling ultrafast, linearly polarized light pulses with lattice vibrations (phonons), the team broke the material’s time-reversal symmetry. The findings open new possibilities for next-generation quantum and spintronic devices that use light alone to control electron spins on ultrafast timescales. [Nature Communications, IF: 18.9]
