(Nature Photonics, 2023).

GIST Professor Chang Hee Nam Selected for the 2026 IUPAP Yoshiaki Kato Award
Professor Chang Hee Nam of the Department of Physics and Photon Science at GIST has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 IUPAP Yoshiaki Kato Award, presented by the International Committee on Ultrahigh Intensity Lasers (ICUIL) of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).
Professor Nam is recognized for his leadership in advancing ultrahigh-power laser development and his pioneering contributions to relativistic plasma physics, strong-field quantum electrodynamics, laser-driven particle acceleration, and ultrabright radiation generation. The award presentation and his award lecture will take place during the 11th International Conference on Ultrahigh Intensity Lasers (ICUIL 2026), to be held in St Andrews, Scotland, United Kingdom, from November 8 to 13, 2026.
Established in honor of Professor Yoshiaki Kato, the founding chair of ICUIL, the award recognizes researchers who have made significant contributions to ultrahigh-intensity laser science and technology.
In 2012, Professor Nam established the Center for Relativistic Laser Science (CoReLS), an Institute for Basic Science (IBS) research center at GIST. As its founding director, he led strong-field physics research using petawatt (PW) lasers. In 2016, his team upgraded an existing PW laser system to deliver 20-femtosecond pulses with a peak power of 4.2 PW. In 2021, the team achieved a laser intensity of 1.1 × 10²³ W/cm², setting a world record at the time. This achievement provided a crucial experimental foundation for exploring light–matter interactions under extreme electromagnetic fields.
Using these laser capabilities, the team demonstrated all-optical nonlinear Compton scattering by colliding multi-GeV electron beams produced through laser wakefield acceleration with ultrahigh-intensity laser pulses, generating gamma rays with energies of several hundred MeV. The study was published in Nature Photonics and featured on the cover of its November 2024 issue. The team also accelerated protons to energies exceeding 110 MeV using microstructured, nanometer-thick targets (Nature Communications, 2025) and demonstrated brilliant hard X-ray generation from carbon nanotube plasma (Nature Photonics, 2023).
For nearly four decades, Professor Nam has pursued research in plasma physics and laser science, expanding his work from high-harmonic generation and attosecond science to ultrahigh-intensity laser physics. He has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and the Optical Society of America (now Optica). Through his extensive international scientific activities and research collaborations, he has contributed to the advancement of ultrahigh-intensity laser science.
